After a couple rough months on the all-too-familiar newbie learning curve making two baby quilts, I was itching to make quilt to keep for myself. My first of many, many fabric obsessions was Chestnut Street by Fig Tree and Co. and I had a couple of charm packs sitting pretty on my shelf just begging to be used.
I spent HOURS googling “beginner friendly quilt patterns.” HOURS. I didn’t know about all the talented bloggers and designers I later turned to for inspiration. After a few long trips down that quilty rabbit hole, I settled on a disappearing nine patch tutorial that seemed beginner friendly.
I have a long history of biting off more than I can chew when I jump into new hobbies. Luckily, this time I took a savory, manageable bite instead and a few days later had a quilt top! As a thank you to the online quilting community that shared so many tips, tricks, and tutorials so I could learn, here’s the free pattern for First Crush Charm – my first quilt! May another beginner quilter find their confidence like I did with this friendly pattern.
The sweetest part?
My Grandma, motivated by my newfound interest in quilting, was inspired to finish the quilts she started for all her grandchildren when we were young. Not long after after I finished this project my grandmother gave me my queen size, hand quilted, double Irish chain quilt.
Did you get that? Queen size. Hand quilted. Crazy lady.
But what’s even crazier, it was HER first quilt! Her FIRST! My overly ambitious grandmother pieced a queen size quilt and then quilted it by hand as her very first ever quilt!
I ain’t that brave.
I was so touched and honored that as the first grandkid, it meant I was gifted the first quilt. So this year for Christmas I gifted to her MY first quilt – and suddenly two generations of quilters could share their love of handmade with each other.
Maybe someday I’ll hand quilt a special blanket in honor of my Grandma, the ambitious woman who taught my mother, who taught me, that we can do anything and be anything we desire.
